Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made those words in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
