The English and Welsh Drawn in the Same Group for RWC 2027 Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby legends including former All Black Dan Carter.

England and Wales have been drawn in an identical pool for the World Cup in 2027, setting up a highly-anticipated early clash in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw recalls their infamous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the English team's shock early exit.

Key Group Draws

The Irish alongside the Scots also share a group together, just as the situation from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they secured a 36-14 win, with their opponents failing to advance to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, who each made a strong impression as underdogs in France, round out that same group.

Significantly, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from defending champions and world number one South Africa before the showpiece match, assuming the South Africans win their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

Should the groups play out according to the current global standings, other leading contenders like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from both England and Ireland all the way to the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the other top-ranked nation on that side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Major Fixture

Tournament hosts the Wallabies find themselves alongside their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

The Wallabies will open the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to launch the event.

In other groups, reigning champions the Springboks have drawn the Azzurri, Georgia and the Oaks. The French team are grouped with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Los Pumas will take on Fiji, Spain and the Canadian team as the tournament grows to 24 teams from the twenty who competed in France.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 stage for the very first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

While the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – most likely Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will face a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
