Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
