EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
