Around 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Law enforcement state they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then discovered many other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials report preliminary tests show the fluid was likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; authorities are presently not informed of any physical harm in relation with the event," they added.
City officials said they were trying "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for tips.
A senior representative said the attack left him without words and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This act affects the core of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on online, referring to the killing of nine people by a shooter targeting residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
